OBJECTIVE To identify obstetric risk factors and to elucidate the effect of prolonged rupture of the membranes on the development of cystic periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) in preterm infants. METHODS A retrospective case-control study of 95 preterm infants with the diagnosis of PVL and 245 healthy controls matched for gestational age.
