The major cause of death in cystic fibrosis is respiratory failure associated with pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. This follows a variable period of chronic pulmonary infection and progressive lung injury associated with a considerable morbidity. Lung injury is caused mainly by a continuous and exuberant host inflammatory response to chronic endobronchial bacterial infection.
