The enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) catalyzes the first step of the synthesis of prostanoids. In the early 1990s, COX was demonstrated to exist as two distinct isoforms. COX-1 is constitutively expressed as a "housekeeping" enzyme in most tissues.
