Intracellular concentration of cGMP depends on the activity of guanylate cyclase, responsible for its synthesis, on the activity of cyclic nucleotide degrading enzymes - phosphodiesterases (PDEs). There are two forms of guanylate cyclase: the membrane-bound cyclase and the soluble form.
