In order to minimise the risks of vomiting and aspiration of gastric content, patients scheduled for elective surgery need to endure a period of starvation and fluid deprivation. This allows time for gastric emptying of ingested food and liquid as aspiration of gastric contents into the lungs may cause aspiration pneumonitis.
