Gamma sterilization in an air environment can induce oxidation in polyethylene. Oxidation can lead to polyethylene embrittlement, compromising mechanical integrity and clinical performance of polyethylene bearings. For these reasons, orthopaedic manufacturers have modified their methods of sterilizing and packaging polyethylene.
