Joint replacements of the hip and knee are among the most clinically successful operations. According to figures compiled by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the number of primary total hip replacements performed in the USA was 220,000 in 2003. This was 38% more than in 1996 and this number is expected to rise to 572,000 (plus another 97,000 revisions) by 2030.
