In this article a non-technical survey is given of the present status of Axiomatic Quantum Field Theory and interesting future directions of this approach are outlined. The topics covered are the universal structure of the local algebras of observables, their relation to the underlying fields and the significance of their relative positions. Moreover, the physical interpretation of the theory is discussed with emphasis on problems appearing in gauge theories, such as the revision of the…
A ug 1 99 9 New Concepts in Particle Physics from Solution of old Problem
This is a survey on recent progress in the understanding of some profound issues concerning the relation between onand off-shell concepts in local quantum physics. Proofs for special situations have
New concepts in particle physics from the solution of an old problem
Recent ideas on modular localization in local quantum physics are used to clarify the relation between on- and off-shell quantities in particle physics; in particular, the relation between on-shell
Index Theory and Adiabatic Limit in QFT
The paper has the form of a proposal concerned with the relationship between the three mathematically rigorous approaches to quantum field theory: (1) local algebraic formulation of Haag, (2)
Time Evolution in an External Field: The Unitarity Paradox
Abstract One of the axioms of quantum field theory is the property of unitarity of the evolution operator. However, if one considers the quantum electrodynamics in the external field in the leading
Foundations for relativistic quantum theory. I. Feynman’s operator calculus and the Dyson conjectures
In this paper, we provide a representation theory for the Feynman operator calculus. This allows us to solve the general initial-value problem and construct the Dyson series. We show that the series
On Infravacua and the Superselection Structure of Theories with Massless Particles
In quantum field theories with massless particles, states carrying a nontrivial superselection charge may have very poor localisation properties when compared to the vacuum. In this case, replacing
Microlocal Analysis and¶Interacting Quantum Field Theories:¶Renormalization on Physical Backgrounds
Abstract:We present a perturbative construction of interacting quantum field theories on smooth globally hyperbolic (curved) space-times. We develop a purely local version of the
Structure of Coset Models
We study inclusions of local, chiral, conformal quantum theories C which are contained in an ambient theory B and commute with another given subtheory A. These subtheories C are called Coset models.
A Proof of the AdS-CFT Correspondence 1
AbstractThe AdS-CFT correspondence is established as a re-assignment of localizationto the observables which is consistent with locality and covariance. 1 Introduction The \holographic principle", or
Modular theory and Eyvind Wichmann's contributions to modern particle physics theory
Some of the consequences of Eyvind Wichmann’s contributions to modular theory and the QFT phase-space structure are presented. In order to show the power of those ideas in contemporary problems, I

Local quantum physics : fields, particles, algebras
This textbook gives a comprehensive account of local quantum physics understood as the synthesis of quantum theory with the principle of locality. Centered on the algebraic approach, it describes
Quantum Field Theory in Gravitational Background
This is a short survey of results contained in [1]. We study the influence of gravitation on quantum field theory, insofar, that gravity is considered as background field, changing Minkowski space
Perturbative quantum field theory at positive temperatures: An axiomatic approach
It is shown that the perturbative expansions of the correlation functions of a relativistic quantum field theory at finite temperature are uniquely determined by the equations of motion and standard
Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetime and Black Hole Thermodynamics
In this book, Robert Wald provides a pedagogical introduction to the formulation of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. He begins with a treatment of the ordinary one-dimensional quantum
Analyticity Properties and Thermal Effects for General Quantum Field Theory on de Sitter Space-Time
Abstract:We propose a general framework for quantum field theory on the de Sitter space-time (i.e. for local field theories whose truncated Wightman functions are not required to vanish). By
The existence of quantum fields for local nets of algebras of observables
A necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of quantum fields related to a given local net of algebras of observables is proved. This criterion is written in terms of the ‘‘conjugation
Locality and the structure of particle states
Starting from the principle of locality of observables we derive localization properties of massive particle states which hold in all models of relativistic quantum theory, including gauge theories.
Scaling algebras and renormalization group in algebraic quantum field theory
For any given algebra of local observables in Minkowski space an associated scaling algebra is constructed on which renormalization group (scaling) transformations act in a canonical manner. The
Causal independence and the energy-level density of states in local quantum field theory
Within the general framework of local quantum field theory a physically motivated condition on the energy-level density of well-localized states is proposed and discussed. It is shown that any model
The renormalization group of the model ofA4-coupling in the abstract approach of quantum field theory
For the model ofA4-interaction the postulates of the renormalization group are stated within the abstract approach of quantum field theory. In the massive case these postulates follow if an on-shell
