Culicoides spp. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are common biting £ies with grey-andwhite patterned wings. They are important as vectors of viruses causing diseases of livestock such as bluetongue and African horse sickness (Nevill and Anderson, 1972). Forty-seven Culicoides spp. have been recorded from southern Africa (Meiswinkel et al., 1994) but most collections were from South Africa.
