Abstract The subject of crystal-to-glass transformations in the solid state is surveyed. It is shown that these transformations occur when a non-equilibrium state of a crystalline solid has a free energy which is greater than that of an amorphous phase. The formation of a metastable glassy phase depends on the existence of kinetic hindrances which impede the formation of more stable equilibrium crystalline phases.
