Beta-lactamases inactivate beta-lactam antibiotics and are a major cause of antibiotic resistance. The recent outbreaks of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenem resistant (KPC) infections mediated by KPC type beta-lactamases are creating a serious threat to our "last resort" antibiotics, the carbapenems.
