A 27-year-oId previously healthy woman presented to the emergency department in Calgary, Alberta, with shortness of breath, muscle aches and a nonproductive cough that had lasted for 48 hours. During the previous two weeks, the patient had experienced a loss of appetite, fatigue, fever and chills. She reported smoking tobacco and marijuana daily and drinking 12 alcoholic drinks per week; she did not use injection drugs. She took no medications and had no known allergies.
