Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive, extracellular bacterium that is responsible for significant mortality and morbidity worldwide. Pneumolysin (PLY), a cytolysin produced by all clinical isolates of the pneumococcus, is one of the most important virulence factors of this pathogen.
