Previous studies have revealed that the RE strain of HSV type 1 (HSV-1) induces a tissue-destructive inflammatory response in the mouse cornea that is mediated by CD4 T lymphocytes, whereas the KOS strain of HSV-1 preferentially activates CD8 T lymphocytes in the cornea.
