Abstract The paper deals with the new types of dissipative layers, called Marangoni boundary layers, that can be formed in surface driven flows. Plane similar solutions are studied for the case in which the flow fields of the two interfacing fluids are coupled kinematically and thermally. The similarity classes are derived, the pertinent equations are solved numerically and the features of the flow field in the layers are analysed and discussed.
