This paper compares theory and experiment for the kinetics of time-dependent sedimentation. We discuss noninteracting (apart from hydrodynamic interaction) suspensions and colloids which may exhibit behavior similar to the one-dimensional motion of compressible gas. The velocity of sedimentation (or creaming) depends upon the volume fraction of the constituting particles and leads to Burgers-like equations for concentration profiles. It is shown that even the bidispersive system of two coupled…

A new theory of the sedimentation processes of polydisperse suspensions forming compressible sediments, of strongly degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic type for arbitrary N and particle size distributions is shown.

It is shown that a numerical inversion of a kinetic profile yields the full hydrodynamic factor K( Φ) up to the concentration of the original unsettled suspension, and that the dilute part of the profile yields a 'dynamic' gravitation length also related to K(Φ).

Microdivers to study sedimentation in polydisperse, concentrated colloidal suspensions

A review of settling at low Peclét number, where Brownian fluctuations are dominant, aims to show that a lot more can be learnt both from the sedimentation equilibrium and from the particle settling dynamics of a wide class of systems, ranging from simple colloids to mesogenic suspensions.

Comparison of the LBM with the modified local Crank-Nicolson method solution of transient one-dimensional nonlinear Burgers' equation

- Physics, MathematicsInt. J. Comput. Sci. Math.
- 2016

This paper solves the transient one-dimensional nonlinear Burgers' equation using the lattice Boltzmann method and shows that at higher Reynolds numbers the accuracy of the LBM is higher than the MLCN method and vice versa.

It is still unknown whether there are families of tight knots whose lengths grow faster than linearly with crossing numbers, but the largest power has been reduced to 3/z, and some other physical models of knots as flattened ropes or strips which exhibit similar length versus complexity power laws are surveyed.
