Many couples in therapy have a history of childhood abuse. Sensitivity to power and difficulty with trusting one’s intimate partner are key concerns for these couples. This chapter presents the relational trust theory, which describes how gendered power imbalances in couple interactions can trigger distrustful emotional power responses from the adult-survivor partner(s).
