We investigate charging effects on a small metallic island and their suppression by coupling to a lead electrode via a tunnel junction. For small tunnel conductance the effective charging energy can be computed perturbatively, while for very large tunnel conductance a semiclassical analysis in terms of a summation over multi-sluggon-contributions is viable. For intermediate tunnel conductance the effective charging energy is computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical data support…
