We investigate charging effects on a small metallic island and their suppression by coupling to a lead electrode via a tunnel junction. For small tunnel conductance the effective charging energy can be computed perturbatively, while for very large tunnel conductance a semiclassical analysis in terms of a summation over multi-sluggon-contributions is viable. For intermediate tunnel conductance the effective charging energy is computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical data support…

It is observed, when approaching the ballistic limit, that charge quantization is destroyed by quantum fluctuations, and scales as the square root of the residual probability for an electron to be reflected across the quantum channel; this scaling also applies beyond the different regimes of connection strength currently accessible to theory.
