Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects more than 5% of the world population, an estimated 300 to 350 million people [1-5]. In the United States, more than 1 million persons are persistently infected [3, 6]. The 270 000 to 300 000 cases of acute hepatitis B that occur annually in the United States contribute 5000 to 30 000 new cases of chronic infection [2, 7, 8] because 2% to 10% of infected adults develop chronic hepatitis [9-14].
