The aim was to assess costs and cost-effectiveness of additional acupuncture treatment in patients with headache compared with patients receiving routine care alone. A randomized, controlled trial was conducted, including patients (≥18 years old) with primary headache (more than 12 months, at least two headaches/month). Outcome parameters were quality of life (Short Form 36), direct and indirect costs differences during the 3-month study period and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER…
Acupuncture in Patients With Headache
TLDR
Acupuncture plus routine care in patients with headache was associated with marked clinical improvements compared with routine care alone, and intensity of pain and quality of life improvements were more pronounced in the acupuncture vs. control group.
Economic analysis of acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis
TLDR
The inclusion of acupuncture in health care results beneficial mainly for its observed trend in reduced losses of productivity and income, with the latter often exceeding the costs of acupuncture treatment.
The Combined Effect of Acupuncture and Tanacetum parthenium on quality of life in women with headache: Randomised study
TLDR
An improvement of the quality of life and better analgesic effect of acupuncture combined with TAN treatment on migraine pain in women when compared with acupuncture or TAN alone is shown.
Acupuncture in the Inpatient Acute Care Setting: A Pragmatic, Randomized Control Trial
TLDR
Acupuncture is accepted by a majority of hospitalized acute care patients, however, it did not reduce LOS in this already short-stay population.
Health economic evaluation of acupuncture along meridians for treating migraine in China: results from a randomized controlled trial
TLDR
Treatment of specific ac upoints in Shaoyang meridians is more cost-effective than that of non-acupoints, representing a dramatic improvement in the quality of life of people with migraine and a significant reduction in cost.
Acupuncture for the prevention of tension-type headache.
TLDR
Whether acupuncture is more effective than no prophylactic treatment/routine care only, as effective as other interventions in reducing headache frequency in adults with episodic or chronic tension-type headache and the quality of the acupuncture intervention is investigated is investigated.
Patient experience of acupuncture provision in a GP practice.
Acupuncture for tension-type headache.
TLDR
It is concluded that acupuncture could be a valuable non-pharmacological tool in patients with frequent episodic or chronic tension-type headaches with small but statistically significant benefits of acupuncture over sham.

TLDR
The acupuncture intervention investigated in this trial was more effective than no treatment but not significantly moreeffective than minimal acupuncture for the treatment of tension-type headache.
Acupuncture for chronic headache in primary care: large, pragmatic, randomised trial
TLDR
Acupuncture leads to persisting, clinically relevant benefits for primary care patients with chronic headache, particularly migraine, and expansion of NHS acupuncture services should be considered.
Acupuncture for patients with migraine: a randomized controlled trial.
TLDR
It is found that acupuncture was no more effective than sham acupuncture in reducing migraine headaches although both interventions were moreeffective than a waiting list control.
Cost effectiveness analysis of a randomised trial of acupuncture for chronic headache in primary care
TLDR
Acupuncture for chronic headache improves health related quality of life at a small additional cost; it is relatively cost effective compared with a number of other interventions provided by the NHS.
Acupuncture for Recurrent Headaches: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials
TLDR
Overall, the existing evidence suggests that acupuncture has a role in the treatment of recurrent headaches, however, the quality and amount of evidence is not fully convincing.
Acupuncture as a complex intervention: a holistic model.
TLDR
The holistic model of acupuncture treatment, in which "the whole being greater than the sum of the parts" has implications for service provision and for research trial design, is investigated.
Epidemiology of tension-type headache.
TLDR
Episodic tension-type headache is a highly prevalent condition with a significant functional impact at work, home, and school; despite its greater individual impact, CTTH has a smaller societal impact than ETTH.
Migraine prevalence. A review of population-based studies.
TLDR
The prevalence of migraine is approximately 6% among men and 15 to 17% among women, and the gender ratio also appears to vary by age, increasing from menarche to about age 42 years and declining thereafter.
