I present the main features of the brane cosmology scenario, according to which our universe is a self-gravitating brane embedded in a five-dimensional spacetime.

Extra dimensions and dark matter
In this paper we study the general scenario of an effective theory coming from the compactification of a higher dimensional theory in a string inspired setting. This leads to gauge couplingExpand
Brane-World Gravity
This review analyzes the geometry, dynamics and perturbations of simple brane-world models for cosmology and astrophysics, mainly focusing on warped 5-dimensional brane -worlds based on the Randall-Sundrum models. Expand

Cosmology of One Extra Dimension with Localized Gravity
We examine the cosmology of the two recently proposed scenarios for a five dimensional universe with localized gravity. We find that the scenario with a non-compact fifth dimension is potentiallyExpand
Non-conventional cosmology from a brane-universe
Abstract We consider “brane universes”, where energy density is confined to four-dimensional hypersurfaces (three-branes) whereas one extra compact dimension is felt by gravity only. We show that theExpand

In the present Letter, the impact of the existence of extra dimensions on cosmology, in particular, on the evolution of cosmological perturbations is analyzed. Expand
An Alternative to compactification
Conventional wisdom states that Newton's force law implies only four noncompact dimensions. We demonstrate that this is not necessarily true in the presence of a nonfactorizable background geometry.Expand
Gravitational waves from inflation on the brane
We discuss the evolution of gravitational waves in a brane-world cosmology embedded in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. We show that during slow-roll inflation, modelled as a period ofExpand
Cosmological expansion in the presence of extra dimensions
It was recently pointed out that global solutions of Einstein's equations for a 3-brane universe embedded in four spatial dimensions give rise to a Friedmann equation of the formExpand
Eleven-dimensional supergravity on a manifold with boundary
Abstract In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of eleven-dimensional supergravity on a manifold with boundary, which is believed to be relevant to the strong coupling limit of the E 8 × E 8Expand
Chaotic inflation on the brane
We consider slow-roll inflation in the context of recently proposed four-dimensional effective gravity induced on the world-volume of a three-brane in five-dimensional Einstein gravity. We findExpand
Brane cosmological evolution in a bulk with cosmological constant
Abstract We consider the cosmology of a “3-brane universe” in a five dimensional (bulk) space-time with a cosmological constant. We show that Einstein's equations admit a first integral, analogous toExpand
Brane cosmological perturbations
We address the question of cosmological perturbations in the context of brane cosmology, where our Universe is a three-brane where matter is confined, whereas gravity lives in higher-dimensionalExpand
