There are two main reasons for the recent renewal of interest in cosmic strings: Fundamental string-theory models suggest their existence; and there are at least two tentative observations of their possible effects. In this talk, I review their current status in the light of these two factors.

Topological defects in cosmology : Cosmic Strings
This paper will discuss cosmic strings. Two toy models show how cosmic strings are created and a more topological viewpoint is also presented. A scaling solution will be derived and their position as
Cosmic Superstrings Revisited
It is possible that superstrings, as well as other one‐dimensional branes, could have been produced in the early universe and then expanded to cosmic size today. I discuss the conditions under which
COSMIC SUPERSTRINGS REVISITED
It is possible that superstrings, as well as other one-dimensional branes, could have been produced in the early universe and then expanded to cosmic size today. I discuss the conditions under which
GUT cosmic strings and inflation
We show that GUT cosmic strings generically form after inflation if a {\it non-inert} symmetry breaks after inflation; they form irrespectively of the inflationary scenario and in both supersymmetric
Inflation and String Theory
• Mathematics, Physics
• 2014
We review cosmological inflation and its realization in quantum field theory and in string theory. This material is a portion of a book, also entitled "Inflation and String Theory", to be published
Black hole formation from collisions of cosmic fundamental strings
• Physics
• 2006
We develop the general formalism for joining, splitting and interconnection of closed and open strings. As an application, we study examples of fundamental cosmic string collisions leading to
Introduction to Cosmic F- and D-Strings
In these lectures I discuss the possibility that superstrings of cosmic length might exist and be observable. I first review the original idea of cosmic strings arising as gauge theory solitons, and
Inflation from warped space
A long period of inflation can be triggered when the inflaton is held up on the top of a steep potential by the infrared end of a warped space. We first study the field theory description of such a
Hot scalar radiation around a cosmic string setting bounds on the coupling parameter ξ
A bstractIn this work, by investigating the low temperature behaviour of a scalar field around a cosmic string, and assuming stable thermodynamic equilibrium, it is shown that the coupling parameter
Gravitational Radiation by Cosmic Strings in a Junction
• Physics
• 2008
The formalism for computing the gravitational power radiation from excitations on cosmic strings forming a junction is presented and applied to the simple case of co-planar strings at a junction when

It is argued that the motion of strings will lead to the generation of a primordial magnetic field and the efficient formation of large-scale structure and large streaming velocities in the Universe without significantly affecting the microwave-background isotropy.

Cosmic Strings
Cosmic strings, a hot subject in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, lost its appeal when it was found that it leads to inconsistencies in the power spectrum of the measured cosmic microwave background
STRUCTURE FORMATION BY COSMIC STRINGS WITH A COSMOLOGICAL CONSTANT

We investigate cosmic string models for structure formation which include a non-zero cosmological constant. We nd that the background evolution of density perturbations and modi cations to the

We study cosmic string formation within supersymmetric grand unified theories. We consider gauge groups having a rank between 4 and 8. We examine all possible spontaneous symmetry breaking patterns

There has been much interest in the cosmological consequences of line-like topological defects (‘cosmic strings’) which may be produced in a phase transition in the early Universe1–8. Such strings
