We study the reionization of the Universe by stellar sources using a numerical approach that combines fast 3D radiative transfer calculations with high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations. By supplementing a one-step radiative transfer code specifically designed for following ionization processes with an adaptive ray-tracing algorithm, we are able to speed up the calculations significantly to the point where handling a vast number of sources becomes technically feasible. This allows us to…
Radiative Transfer Simulations of Cosmic Reionization. I. Methodology and Initial Results
We present a new hybrid code for large-volume, high-resolution simulations of cosmic reionization, which utilizes an N-body algorithm for dark matter, physically motivated prescriptions for baryons
Cosmic reionization by stellar sources: population III stars
We combine fast radiative transfer calculations with high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations to study an epoch of early hydrogen reionization by primordial stellar sources at redshifts 15 ≤ z ≤
Simulations of galaxy formation with radiative transfer: hydrogen reionization and radiative feedback
We carry out hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation that simultaneously follow radiative transfer of hydrogen-ionizing photons, based on the optically thin variable Eddington tensor
Self-regulated reionization
Recently, we have presented the first, truly large-scale radiative transfer simulations of inhomogeneous cosmic reionization which resolve all the possible halo sources down to the dwarf galaxy mass
Experimental constraints on self-consistent reionization models
A self-consistent formalism to jointly study cosmic reionization and thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in a ΛCDM cosmology is presented. The model implements most of the relevant
How Very Massive Metal-Free Stars Start Cosmological Reionization
The initial conditions and relevant physics for the formation of the earliest galaxies are well specified in the concordance cosmology. Using ab initio cosmological Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement
Efficient Simulations of Early Structure Formation and Reionization
Detailed theoretical studies of the high-redshift universe, and especially reionization, are generally forced to rely on time-consuming N-body codes and/or radiative transfer algorithms. We present a
Radiation-induced large-scale structure during the reionization epoch: the autocorrelation function
The structures produced during the epoch of reionization by the action of radiation on neutral hydrogen are in principle different from those that arise through gravitational growth of initially
FULLY COUPLED SIMULATION OF COSMIC REIONIZATION. II. RECOMBINATIONS, CLUMPING FACTORS, AND THE PHOTON BUDGET FOR REIONIZATION
We use a fully self-consistent cosmological simulation including dark matter dynamics, multispecies hydrodynamics, chemical ionization, flux limited diffusion radiation transport, and a parameterized
Simulations and analytic calculations of bubble growth during hydrogen reionization
We present results from a large volume simulation of hydrogen reionization. We combine 3D radiative transfer calculations and an N-body simulation, describing structure formation in the intergalactic

Photon Consumption in Minihalos during Cosmological Reionization
At the earliest epochs of structure formation in cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies, the smallest nonlinear objects are the numerous small halos that condense with virial temperatures below ~104 K.
Reionization of hydrogen and helium by early stars and quasars
We compute the reionization histories of hydrogen and helium caused by the ionizing radiation fields produced by stars and quasars. For the quasars we use a model based on halo-merger rates that
