Abstract We present new developments on the Cosmic–Ray driven, galactic dynamo, modeled by means of direct, resistive CR–MHD simulations, performed with ZEUS and PIERNIK codes. The dynamo action, leading to the amplification of large–scale galactic magnetic fields on galactic rotation timescales, appears as a result of galactic differential rotation, buoyancy of the cosmic ray component and resistive dissipation of small–scale turbulent magnetic fields. Our new results include demonstration of… Expand
Cosmic rays and the magnetic field in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 - II. The magnetic field structure
Context. There are several edge-on galaxies with a known magnetic field structure in their halo. A vertical magnetic field significantly enhances the cosmic-ray transport from the disk into the halo.Expand
Interstellar magnetic fields in the Galactic center region
Aims. We seek to obtain a picture of the interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic center region that is as clear and complete as possible. Methods. We review the observational knowledge that hasExpand
The large scale magnetic field structure of the spiral galaxy NGC 5775
In order to better determine the large-scale 3D-structure of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies we present a Faraday rotation analysis of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5775. Deep radio-continuumExpand
Magnetic field structure due to the global velocity field in spiral galaxies
We present a set of global, self-consistent N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations of the dynamic evolution of galactic discs with gas, including magnetic fields. We have implementedExpand
Magnetic Field Evolution in Isolated and Interacting Spiral Galaxies
This doctoral thesis covers the question about the existence and evolution of magnetic fields in galaxies. The kinematic evolution of magnetic fields in isolated spiral galaxies as well as their self-Expand
A mean-field approach to the propagation of field patterns in stratified magnetorotational turbulence
Local shearing box simulations of stratified magnetorotational turbulence invariably exhibit cyclic field patterns which propagate away from the disc mid-plane. A common explanation for this isExpand
Reconnection studies under different types of turbulence driving
Abstract. We study a model of fast magnetic reconnection in the presence of weak turbulence proposed by Lazarian and Vishniac (1999) using three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The modelExpand
PIERNIK mhd code - a multi-fluid, non-ideal extension of the relaxing-TVD scheme (IV)
We present a new multi-fluid, grid MHD code PIERNIK, which is based on the Relaxing TVD scheme (Jin & Xin, 1995). The original scheme (see Trac & Pen (2003) and Pen et al. (2003)) has been extendedExpand

Amplification of Galactic Magnetic Fields by the Cosmic-Ray-driven Dynamo
We present the first numerical model of the magnetohydrodynamic cosmic-ray-driven dynamo of the type proposed by Parker in 1992. The driving force of the amplification process comes from cosmic raysExpand
Fast dynamos, cosmic rays, and the galactic magnetic field
It is suggested here that the dynamo believed to be responsible for the magnetic field of the Galaxy is a fast dynamo due to the dynamical reconnection of the azimuthal field of the Galaxy as theExpand
Direct simulations of a supernova-driven galactic dynamo
Context. Supernovae are known to be the dominant energy source for driving turbulence in the interstellar medium. Yet, their effect on magnetic field amplification in spiral galaxies is still poorlyExpand
Global Model of the Interstellar Medium in our Galaxy with New Constraints on the Hot Gas Component
We model the Galactic distribution of the interstellar gas, cosmic rays, magnetic fields, gravitational field, supernovae, and superbubbles, based on the most recent observational data and on theExpand
Discussion of the Electromotive Force Terms in the Model of Parker-unstable Galactic Disks with Cosmic Rays and Shear
We analyze the electromotive force (EMF) terms and basic assumptions of the linear and nonlinear dynamo theories in our three-dimensional numerical model of the Parker instability with cosmic raysExpand
The Effect of Cosmic-Ray Diffusion on the Parker Instability
The Parker instability, which has been considered as a process governing the structure of the interstellar medium, is induced by the buoyancy of magnetic fields and cosmic rays. In previous studies,Expand
The Transport of Cosmic Rays across a Turbulent Magnetic Field
We present a new analysis of the transport of cosmic rays in a turbulent magnetic field that varies in all three spatial dimensions. The analysis utilizes a numerical simulation that integrates theExpand
Topological evolution of Parker-unstable galactic magnetic fields under the influence of Coriolis force and magnetic reconnection
We investigate the influence of the Coriolis force and magnetic reconnection on the evolution of the Parker instability in galactic disks. We apply a model of a local gas cube, permeated by anExpand
Magnetic Field Structure and Stochastic Reconnection in a Partially Ionized Gas
We consider stochastic reconnection in a magnetized, partially ionized medium. Stochastic reconnection is a generic effect that results from field line wandering, in which the speed of reconnectionExpand
A Model for Spontaneous Onset of Fast Magnetic Reconnection
We present a model for the spontaneous onset of fast magnetic reconnection in a weakly collisional plasma, such as the solar corona. When sheared magnetic fields in the corona undergo collisionalExpand
