This introductory talk at the Cosmic Questions conference sponsored by the AAAS summarizes some earlier pictures of the universe and some pictures based on modern physics and cosmology. The uroboros (snake swallowing its tail) is an example of a traditional picture. The Biblical flat-earth picture was very different from the Greek spherical earth-centered picture, which was the standard view until the end of the Middle Ages. Many people incorrectly assume that the Newtonian picture of stars… Expand

Dark Matter and Large Scale Structure III.
We discuss how measurements of the absorption of γ-rays from GeV to TeV energies via pair production on the extragalactic background light (EBL) can probe important issues in galaxy formation. We useExpand

Darkness at Night: A Riddle of the Universe
Why is the sky dark at night? The answer to this ancient and celebrated riddle, says Edward Harrison, seems relatively simple: the sun has set and is now shining on the other side of the earth. ButExpand
What is the dark matter ? Implications for galaxy formation and particle physics
We discuss three arguments that the dark matter which dominates the present universe is not baryonic — based on excluding specific baryonic models, deuterium abundance, and the absence of small-angleExpand
Cosmology and Theology
In this paper I will discuss three different aspects of the relationship between cosmology and theology. The first part of the paper takes up the first of these. There I will adopt my most familiarExpand
Microwave background anisotropies and large-scale structure in universes with cold dark matter, baryons, radiation, and massive and massless neutrinos
Calculations of microwave backgrond anisotropies at various angular scales and of expected large-scale bulk velocities and mass correlation functions are presented for a variety of models whichExpand
The Great Chain of Being: A Study of the History of an Idea
I know not what prompted me 2 years ago, on reading the booklists of the History of Science Society, to pick this paperback reprint of a book I had never heard of. It was probably the echo of theExpand
