It has been shown a specific Horndeski theory of gravity arises from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the gravi-dilaton sector of the low-energy effective heterotic string action with a first α' correction. Here we provide a first investigation of the cosmological solutions to the lower dimensional theory by constructing exact solutions to the field equations in various frames. At tree level, in string frame, we find the duality symmetry of the parent theory is unaltered by dimensional… Expand

Accelerating universes in string theory via field redefinition
We study cosmological solutions in the effective heterotic string theory with α′-correction terms in the string frame. It is pointed out that the effective theory has an ambiguity via fieldExpand
The stringy origins of Galileons and their novel limit
We show generalized Galileons — a particular subclass of Horndeski gravity — arise from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory to firstExpand
Remarks on Tachyon Driven Cosmology
We begin by reviewing the results on the decay of unstable D-branes in type II string theory, and the open-closed string duality proposal that arises from these studies. We then apply this proposalExpand
Elements of string cosmology
Abstract Aspects of string cosmology for critical and non-critical strings are discussed emphasizing the necessity to account for the dilaton dynamics for a proper incorporation of “large-small”Expand
Pre-big-bang in string cosmology
The duality-type symmetries of string cosmology naturally lead us to expect a pre-big-bang phase of accelerated evolution as the dual counterpart of the decelerating expansion era of standardExpand
Superstring Modifications of Einstein's Equations
The modifications of the classical equations of motion of the gravitational field in type II string theory are derived by studying tree-level gravitational scattering amplitudes. The effectiveExpand
Abstract We discuss general features of the β-function equations for spatially flat, (d+ 1)-dimensional cosmological backgrounds at lowest order in the string-loop expansion, but to all orders in α′.Expand
Inflation driven by the Galileon field.
It is shown that (almost) scale-invariant curvature fluctuations can be generated even in the exactly de Sitter background and that the tensor-to-scalar ratio can take a significantly larger value than in the standard inflation models, violating the standard consistency relation. Expand
Self-accelerating universe in Galileon cosmology
We present a cosmological model with a solution that self-accelerates at late times without signs of ghost instabilities on small scales. The model is a natural extension of the Brans-Dicke (BD)Expand
Horndeski stars
We establish the existence of time-dependent solitons in a modified gravity framework, which is defined by the low energy limit of theories with a weakly broken galileon symmetry and a mass term.Expand
