The technique allowing to obtain conformally-invariant theories within the coset space construction is developed. It reproduces all consequences of the conformal invariance and Lagrangians of widely-known conformal field theories. The method of induced representations, which plays the key role in the construction, allows to reveal a special role of the "Nambu-Goldstone fields" for special conformal transformations. Namely, their dependence on the coordinates turns out to be fixed by the…

We establish a mathematically rigorous way to construct effective theories resulting from the spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance. We show that the Namby-Goldstone field corresponding to

Goldstone fields and coset space construction for spontaneously broken spacetime symmetries

We argue that the currently accepted method of constructing effective theories resulting from spontaneous breaking of spacetime symmetries in the coset space framework is misleading. Namely, we

Nonlinearly realized conformal invariance in scale invariant field theories

I explore the implications of promoting nonconformal scale-invariant theories to conformal theories by nonlinearly realizing the missing symmetry. Properties of the associated Nambu-Goldstone mode

Solving puzzles of spontaneously broken spacetime symmetries

We establish a classical analog of the Nambu-Goldstone theorem for spontaneous breaking of spacetime symmetries. It provides a counting rule for independent Nambu-Goldstone fields and states which of

Spontaneously broken gauge theories and the coset construction

The methods of non-linear realizations have proven to be powerful in studying the low energy physics resulting from spontaneously broken internal and spacetime symmetries. In this paper, we

Gauge formulation of gravitation theories. I. The Poincare, de Sitter, and conformal cases

The gauge formulations of various gravitation theories are discussed. They are based on the approach in which we have the group Diff R/sup 4/ acting on x/sup and in which we attach to every

The general method for constructing invariant phenomenological Lagrangians is described. The fields are assumed to transform according to (nonlinear) realizations of an internal symmetry group, given

Nonlinear Realizations. II. Conformal Symmetry

Use is made of the formalism of nonlinear realizations to treat the spontaneous violation of conformal symmetry. The associated "Goldstone" particles, which are characterized by a four-vector and a

Einstein gravity, massive gravity, multi-gravity and nonlinear realizations

A bstractThe existence of a ghost free theory of massive gravity begs for an interpre-tation as a Higgs phase of General Relativity. We revisit the study of massive gravity as a Higgs phase. Absent a

Gauge formulation of gravitation theories. II. The special conformal case

The gauge formulation of conformal gravity with the conformally invariant vacuum is discussed.

Gauge theories as theories of spontaneous breakdown

Any gauge theory is proved to arise from spontaneous breakdown of symmetry under certain infinite parameter group, the corresponding gauge field being the Goldstone field by which this breakdown is
