Lower respiratory infections are the second most common cause of life-years lost globally (1). In developed countries, hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is common, is often associated with the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requiring mechanical ventilation (2), and is associated with appreciable mortality (3).
