The expression of dental morphological characteristics is partially genetically controlled, and is assumed to be similar in deciduous and permanent dentitions. However, there are few published data comparing normal morphological variation between the two dentitions in the same individual. For the current study, data were collected from European Americans (N = 54) whose teeth were cast both as children and adults. We observed 19 trait expressions in deciduous and permanent dentitions. Deciduous…
Brief communication: the use of alternative dental measurements on deciduous teeth.
TLDR
While cervical and crown measurements provide different statistical results, cervical measurements can provide information relevant to anthropological studies and may allow for larger datasets to be used by allowing the inclusion of teeth with modified crowns.
Morphological and Numerical Characteristics of the Southern Chinese dentitions. Part I: Anomalies in the Permanent Dentition
TLDR
Higher prevalences of double tooth, dens evaginatus and missing mandibular incisors can be considered to be characteristics of the southern Chinese permanent dentition.
Comparative performance of deciduous and permanent dental morphology in detecting biological relatives.
TLDR
Overall, morphological traits of permanent tooth crowns perform moderately well in distinguishing relatives from non-relatives, but deciduous crown variations may provide a more direct reflection of the underlying genetic structure of intra-site or intra-cemetery samples.
Morphological and Numerical Characteristics of the Southern Chinese Dentitions. Part IV: Traits in the Primary Dentition
TLDR
Higher prevalences of seventh accessory cusp, distal trigonid crest and metaconid ridge can be considered to be characteristics of the southern Chinese primary dentition.
Morphological variations and prevalence of aberrant traits of primary molars
TLDR
The study describes, for the first time, the existence of aberrant dental traits in primary molars in a population, adding anthropological significance of primary dentition in various other populations.
Geographic Variation in Nonmetric Dental Traits of the Deciduous Molars of Pan and Gorilla
TLDR
It is found that the deciduous molars show similar variation to adult premolars and molars within Pan and Gorilla, which suggests that thedeciduous dentition of these and other apes may contain diagnostic traits that are not currently in use.
Relationship of Carabelli's Trait Between the Upper Second Deciduous and First Permanent Molars
TLDR
The frequencies of Carabelli trait are determined, which are an inner knob near the second molars and the first permanent molar and has been used as an important ethnic index for decades and can be used to show great ethnic differences in dentistry.
Morphological variation of the deciduous second molars in the Baka Pygmies
TLDR
The variation of the Baka’s deciduous upper and lower second molars (dm2s) in comparison to a geographically heterogeneous human sample is explored by means of 3D geometric morphometrics and analysis of dental traits to show that the different populations largely overlap based on the shape of their dm2s.
Morphological characteristics of primary dentition in 3 -5yr old school going children of Chidambaram and Srinagar in anterior teeth
TLDR
The present investigation found that male teeth were larger than female in both group one and group two except for lower lateral incisors and the tooth dimensions were larger for Srinagar children [North] compared to Chidambaram children [South].
“From the mouth of a child”: dental attributes and health status during childhood in Mesolithic India
TLDR
Because sub-adult dental remains from Mesolithic contexts are very rare in South Asia, this specimen yields critical insight into deciduous dental attributes, including: tooth crown size and temporal trends in dental reduction, non-metric dental morphology and biological affinity, dental pathology, physiological stress, and diet.

TLDR
The observed pattern of phenotypic variation appeared to be directly related to the relative length of the developmental period that tooth crowns spent in the soft tissue stage prior to calcification, with the second deciduous molar being particularly stable.
Deciduous dental morphology of the prehistoric Jomon people of Japan: comparison of nonmetric characters.
TLDR
The expression of nonmetric traits of the deciduous teeth in the Jomon sample shows a closer affinity with modern Japanese and Native American samples than with American White, Asiatic Indian, and African samples.

Population variation of Carabelli's trait.
TLDR
The purpose of this communication is to further delineate the intergroup variation of Carabelli's trait and also briefly review some of the misconceptions regarding its variation generated by different observational techniques.
Brief communication: discrimination between European-American and African-American children based on deciduous dental metrics and morphology.

Dental size traits within families: path analysis for first molar and lateral incisor.
TLDR
Neither X-linkage nor sex-specific environmental effects are required to explain the transmission of dental size, and sex differences are found in correlated sibling environments for the lateral incisor but not the first molar, to explain in part male-female differences in the distributions of the upper lateralincisor size.
Deciduous dental morphology and the biological affinities of a late Chalcolithic skeletal series from western India.
TLDR
Many of the traits observed in the Inamgaon series exhibit a frequency of occurrence intermediate between figures characteristic of the "Mongoloid" dental complex and the "Caucasoid" dentist complex.
Model for the examination of evolutionary trends in tooth development.
TLDR
Serial C-t scans were used to compare two distinct developmental stages represented by the dentine-enamel junction (DEJ) and outer enamel surface (OES), respectively, in mandibular DM2 and M1 of 31 archaeological specimens, supporting the hypothesis that differences between the two teeth increase throughout development.
Associations between Carabelli trait and cusp areas in human permanent maxillary first molars.
TLDR
It is suggested that the pattern of folding of the internal enamel epithelium in developing molar crowns, particularly in the protocone region, can be modified by a developing Carabelli cusp.
