We investigate the nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of a single and two heavy fermionic impurities being harmonically trapped and repulsively interacting with a finite ensemble of majority fermions. A quench of the potential of the majority species from a double-well to a harmonic trap is applied, enforcing its counterflow which in turn perturbs the impurities. For weak repulsions it is shown that the mixture undergoes a periodic mixing and demixing dynamics, while stronger interactions lead to…

Polaron Problems in Ultracold Atoms: Role of a Fermi Sea across Different Spatial Dimensions and Quantum Fluctuations of a Bose Medium
The notion of a polaron, originally introduced in the context of electrons in ionic lattices, helps us to understand how a quantum impurity behaves when being immersed in and interacting with a

Observation of Attractive and Repulsive Polarons in a Bose-Einstein Condensate.
Radio frequency spectroscopy of ultracold bosonic ^{39}K atoms is used to experimentally demonstrate the existence of a well-defined quasiparticle state of an impurity interacting with a BEC, and finds excellent agreement with theories that incorporate three-body correlations, both in the weak-coupling limits and across unitarity.
Attractive and repulsive Fermi polarons in two dimensions
Fermi polarons are created and investigated in a two-dimensional, spin-imbalanced Fermi gas, measuring their spectral function using momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and finding evidence for a disputed pairing transition between polarons and tightly bound dimers, which provides insight into the elementary pairing mechanism of imbalanced, strongly coupled two- dimensional Fermu gases.
