We present the results of a coronagraphic imaging search for extrasolar planets around the young main-sequence stars Eri and Vega. Concentrating the stellar light into the core of the point-spread function by the adaptive optic system and blocking the core by the occulting mask in the coronagraph, we have achieved the highest sensitivity for point sources in close vicinity of the both central stars. Nonetheless, we had no secure detection of a point source around the stars. The observations…

The major obstacle to the direct detection of companions to nearby stars is the overwhelming brightness of the host star. Current instruments employing the combination of adaptive optics (AO) and…
SPITZER/INFRARED ARRAY CAMERA LIMITS TO PLANETARY COMPANIONS OF FOMALHAUT AND ϵ ERIDANI

Fomalhaut and Eridani are two young, nearby stars that possess extended debris disks whose structures suggest the presence of perturbing planetary objects. With its high sensitivity and stable…
The cold origin of the warm dust around ε Eridani
- Physics, Geology

Context. The nearby K2 V star e Eridani hosts one known inner planet, an outer Kuiper belt analog, and an inner disk of warm dust. Spitzer/IRS measurements indicate that the warm dust is present at…

High-contrast adaptive optics imaging is a powerful technique to probe the architectures of planetary systems from the outside-in and survey the atmospheres of self-luminous giant planets. Direct…
Vega's hot dust from icy planetesimals scattered inwards by an outward-migrating planetary system

Debris disks: seeing dust, thinking of planetesimals and planets
- Physics, Geology

Debris disks are optically thin, almost gas-free dusty disks observed around a significant fraction of main-sequence stars older than about 10 Myr. Since the circumstellar dust is short-lived, the…
