This paper introduces a novel technique for integrating geometry from physical objects into computer aided design (CAD) software. We allow users to copy arbitrary real world object geometry into 2D CAD designs at scale through the use of a camera/projector system. This paper also introduces a system, CopyCAD, that uses this technique, and augments a Computer Controlled (CNC) milling machine. CopyCAD gathers input from physical objects, sketches and interactions directly on a milling machine…
constructable: interactive construction of functional mechanical devices
TLDR
The constructable system achieves precision through tool-specific constraints, user-defined sketch lines, and by using the laser cutter itself for all visual feedback, rather than using a screen or projection.
Interactive construction: interactive fabrication of functional mechanical devices
TLDR
This paper introduces constructable, an interactive drafting table that produces precise physical output in every step through tool-specific constraints, user-defined sketch lines, and by using the laser cutter itself for all visual feedback, rather than using a screen or projection.
MARCut: Marker-based Laser Cutting for Personal Fabrication on Existing Objects
TLDR
This paper proposes a marker-based system as a novel paradigm for direct interactive laser cutting on existing objects based on tangible markers that are applied directly onto the object to express the design.
RoMA: Interactive Fabrication with Augmented Reality and a Robotic 3D Printer
TLDR
The Robotic Modeling Assistant (RoMA), an interactive fabrication system providing a fast, precise, hands-on and in-situ modeling experience, lets users integrate real-world constraints into a design rapidly, allowing them to create well-proportioned tangible artifacts or to extend existing objects.
FormFab: Continuous Interactive Fabrication
TLDR
This paper presents a first step towards interactive fabrication that changes the workpiece continuously while the user is manipulating it, and does not add or subtract material but instead reshapes it (formative fabrication).
Protopiper: Physically Sketching Room-Sized Objects at Actual Scale
Physical sketching of 3D wireframe models, using a hand-held plastic extruder, allows users to explore the design space of 3D models efficiently. Unfortunately, the scale of these devices limits
FormFab : Towards Shape Exploration in Interactive Fabrication
Several systems have illustrated the concept of interactive fabrication, i.e. rather than working through a digital editor, users make edits directly on the physical workpiece. However, so far the
ReForm: Integrating Physical and Digital Design through Bidirectional Fabrication
TLDR
This work built ReForm, a system that integrates digital modeling with shape input, shape output, annotation for machine commands, and visual output, and supports object versioning to allow physical changes to be undone in the digital fabrication process.
Makers' Marks: Physical Markup for Designing and Fabricating Functional Objects
TLDR
Makers' Marks is created, a system based on physically authoring assemblies with sculpting materials and annotation stickers that enables easy creation of complex objects such as TUIs, and leverages physical materials for tangible manipulation and understanding scale.
Shape-Aware Material: Interactive Fabrication with ShapeMe
TLDR
This work introduces ShapeMe, a novel smart material that captures its own geometry as it is physically cut by an artist or designer, and demonstrates a novel technique for integrating digital and physical modeling and suggests new possibilities for creating shape-aware materials.
