In the present work, a detailed analysis of the glassy behavior and the relaxation dynamics of the liquid crystal dimer α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yloxy)-ω-(1-pyrenimine-benzylidene-4'-oxy) heptane (CBO7O.Py) throughout both nematic and smectic-A mesophases by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been performed. CBO7O.Py shows three different dielectric relaxation modes and two glass transition (T_{g}) temperatures: The higher T_{g} is due to the freezing of the molecular motions…

The influence of fluorine terminal group and flexible spacers on properties of the liquid crystal dimers
ABSTRACT Two series of symmetric LC dimers with the same rigid group and different fluorine terminal group (F and F3C) have been synthesised by varying the length of flexible spacers, termed 1 F

Two Glass Transitions Associated to Different Dynamic Disorders in the Nematic Glassy State of a Non-Symmetric Liquid Crystal Dimer Dopped with γ-Alumina Nanoparticles
In the present work, the nematic glassy state of the non-symmetric LC dimer α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yloxy)-ω-(1-pyrenimine-benzylidene-4′-oxy) undecane is studied by means of calorimetric and
Disentangling molecular motions involved in the glass transition of a twist-bend nematic liquid crystal through dielectric studies.
TLDR
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been used to study the molecular orientational dynamics of the glass-forming liquid crystal 1",7"-bis (4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl)heptane (CB7CB) over a wide temperature range of the twist-bend nematic phase, and the critical-like description via the dynamic scaling model seems to give quite good numerical fittings.
Dielectric and thermodynamic study on the liquid crystal dimer α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy)-ω-(1-pyreniminebenzylidene-4'-oxy)undecane (CBO11O·Py).
TLDR
The nematic-to-isotropic phase transition has been exhaustively studied and it has been concluded that the transition is first order in nature and follows the tricritical hypothesis.
Influence of internal flexibility on the double glass transition in a series of odd non-symmetric liquid crystal dimers characterised by dielectric measurements
ABSTRACT Dielectric measurements (thermally stimulated depolarisation currents and broadband dielectric spectroscopy) have been performed near the glass transition to study the glass transition on
Dielectric relaxation in liquid crystalline dimers
Dielectric measurements are reported for liquid crystalline dimers consisting of two mesogenic groups joined through ether links by a flexible alkyl chain. Results are presented for the odd-symmetric
Glassy dynamics of liquid crystalline 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl in the isotropic and supercooled nematic phases.
TLDR
The temperature evolution of dielectric relaxation times (tau(T)) in the isotropic (I) and supercooled nematic (N) phases of 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl is discussed and the existence of the hidden N-SmA transition, damped due to the earlier vitrification at the glass temperature (T(g), is speculatively suggested.
Miscibility studies of two twist-bend nematic liquid crystal dimers with different average molecular curvatures. A comparison between experimental data and predictions of a Landau mean-field theory for the NTB-N phase transition.
TLDR
A self-consistent mean field Landau model is developed using two key order parameters: a symmetric and traceless tensor for the orientational order and a short-range vector field which is orthogonal to the helix axis and rotates around of the heliconical structure with an extremely short periodicity.
Overall dielectric study on the odd members of a highly nonsymmetric pyrene-based series of liquid crystal dimers.
TLDR
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been performed on the odd nonsymmetric liquid crystal dimers of the series α-(4-cyanobiphenyl- 4'-oxy)-ω-(1-pyreniminebenzylidene-4'-oxy) alkanes with n ranging from 3 to 11, as a function of temperature.
Critical behavior and scaling relationships at the SmA(d)-N and N-I transitions in nonyloxycyanobiphenyl (9OCB).
TLDR
It is proved that both phase transitions are weakly first order, displaying a nearly tricritical behavior, and the width of metastable regions seems to be dependent on the physical magnitude, although specific heat and volumetric determinations allow for comparable results.
Molecular theory of dielectric relaxation in nematic dimers.
TLDR
A theory for the dielectric relaxation of dimeric mesogenic molecules in a nematic liquid crystal phase and a quantitative model is developed, which provides new insight into the orientational and conformational dynamics of molecules in ordered liquid crystalline phases.
