This paper is based on measured environmental conditions and ventilation rates during a summer period in the occupied naturally ventilated and passively cooled Environmental Building at the Building Research Establishment, Garston, UK. Initially, the comfort and air quality environmental conditions in the first (typical) floor of the building are discussed. These are found to be satisfactory. The paper then goes on to investigate the cooling effectiveness of the various ventilation flowpaths…
Monitoring and Modelling Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation in Classrooms within a Purpose-Designed Naturally Ventilated School
This paper investigates the performance in use of ther mal passive ventilation stacks in the classrooms of a school during the summer period. Measurements of air temperature, carbon dioxide (CO2) and
Quantitative Reduction Method of Draft in High-Rise Buildings, Using Revolving Doors
Drafts in high-rise buildings caused by the stack effect can cause noise and reduce the performances of ventilation, cooling and heating systems as well as the building’s energy efficiency. Revolving
Development of a Double-Skin Façade for Sustainable Renovation of Old Residential Buildings
The modernist movement in architecture has led to a building boom of a large number of high-rise buildings with glazed façades. These façades were aesthetically pleasing, but have a high energy

Low-Carbon Housings and Indoor Air Quality
The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the background information regarding low-carbon housings in the United Kingdom and to raise the concern of the possible high indoor pollution load
Ventilation rates in European office buildings: A review
The current review creates, for the first time, a comprehensive dataset of ventilation rates measured in European office buildings. This dataset can provide input to modelling studies. A review of

Diminution of fossil fuel inspires researches to look for renewable energy sources. Heat island and road accidents resulted from tires explosion due to excessive asphalt heat (reach to 70 oC) were
When Does An Atrium Enhance Natural Ventilation ?
This paper investigates passive displacement flows in a simple, two-compartment building that comprises a single storey connected to an atrium. Heat gains in the storey and solar gains in the atrium
Optical Daylighting Performance of an Active Mirror System for Visual Sustainability of Residential Environment
This paper presents a newly developed mirror sunlighting system approach that would enable architects to consider daylighting goals by engaging the sunlighting system in early design process to make
Why advanced buildings don't work?
The intent of policy is to achieve robust comfortable low energy buildings. However there are obvious policy disconnects and, where there is evidence, it appears that in general advanced buildings do
