Conversion to Armour Thyroid from Levothyroxine Improved Patient Satisfaction in the Treatment of Hypothyroidism
@inproceedings{Pepper2014ConversionTA, title={Conversion to Armour Thyroid from Levothyroxine Improved Patient Satisfaction in the Treatment of Hypothyroidism}, author={Gary M. Pepper and Paul Casanova-Romero}, year={2014} }
The use of Armour Thyroid (desiccated thyroid) in the treatment of hypothyroidism has generated debate among endocrinologists although there is evidence that a significant percentage of patients prefer this medication to T4-only replacement strategies. [] Key Method Results: On a 5 point Satisfaction Rating Scale with “5” indicative of the highest level of satisfaction, 117 (78.0%) patients gave a score of greater than “3” in preference for AT.

This case emphasizes the importance of using TSH level to gauge dose adjustments in primary hypothyroidism and underscores the current American Thyroid Association recommendation against routine use of compounded thyroid hormone therapy.
Variation in the biochemical response to l-thyroxine therapy and relationship with peripheral thyroid hormone conversion efficiency
- Medicine, BiologyEndocrine connections

The findings imply that thyroid hormone conversion efficiency is an important modulator of the biochemical response to l-T4; FT3 measurement may be an additional treatment target; and l- T4 dose escalation may have limited success to raise FT3 appropriately in some cases.

DTE therapy did not result in a significant improvement in quality of life; however, DTE caused modest weight loss and nearly half (48.6%) of the study patients expressed preference for DTE over L-T₄, which may be relevant for some hypothyroid patients.
