We theoretically investigate the microscopic mechanism of conversion between the electron spin and the microscopic local rotation of atoms in crystals. In phonon modes with angular momenta, the atoms microscopically rotate around their equilibrium positions in crystals. In a simple toy model with phonons, we calculate the spin expectation value by using the adiabatic series expansion. We show that the time-averaged spin magnetization is generated by the microscopic local rotation of atoms via…

Magnetization control by angular momentum transfer from surface acoustic wave to ferromagnetic spin moments

It is demonstrated that the phonon angular momentum of surface acoustic wave can control the magnetization of a ferromagnetic Ni film by means of the phononic-to-electronic conversion of angular momentum in a Ni/LiNbO3 hybrid device.

Phonon Magnetic Moment from Electronic Topological Magnetization.

It is found that the traditional theory of magnetic moments for chiral phonons needs to be refined by introducing a k resolved Born effective charge, and another contribution from the phonon-modified electronic energy together with the momentum-space Berry curvature is identified.

Phonon Angular Momentum Induced by the Temperature Gradient.

This Letter shows that when a temperature gradient is applied and heat current flows in the crystal, the phonon distribution becomes off equilibrium, and a finite angular momentum is generated by the heat current.

Orbital magnetic moments of phonons

In ionic materials, circularly polarized phonons carry orbital magnetic moments that arise from circular motions of the ions, and which interact with other magnetic moments or fields. Here, we

Angular momentum of phonons and the Einstein-de Haas effect

We study angular momentum of phonons in a magnetic crystal. In the presence of a spinphonon interaction, we obtain a nonzero angular momentum of phonons, which is an odd function of magnetization. At
