}Homology of the feeding apparatus of pterobranch hemichordates and the lophophore of bryozoans, brachiopods, and phoronids has been postulated but never rigorously tested. I employ Patterson's (1, 2) three criteria of conjunction, similarity, and congruence to test this putative homology. Although the conjunction and similarity criteria are satisfied, congruence is not. The congruence test is based on a phylogeny derived from 18s rDNA sequence data which show that pterobranchs and lophophorates…

Determining the Composition of the Dwelling Tubes of Antarctic Pterobranchs
- Biology
- 2011
The results indicate that that the tube material may be protein but the composition is unknown, and Identification of any new shared characteristics with either echinoderms or chordates would be valuable in determining clearer relationships among these taxa.
Molecular data indicate the protostome affinity of brachiopods.
- Biology
- 2001
Recent data of molecular origin are reviewed and it is concluded that they argue strongly in favor of the protostome (and lophotrochozoan) affinity of the brachiopods.

Recent data of molecular origin are reviewed and it is concluded that they argue strongly in favor of the protostome (and lophotrochozoan) affinity of the brachiopods.
Ultrastructure of the stomochord and the heart–glomerulus complex in Rhabdopleura compacta (Pterobranchia): phylogenetic implications
- BiologyZoomorphology
- 2003
The data confirm that a glomerulus exists in representatives of the Rhabdopleurida, which previously was only known from the Cephalodiscida, the second highest ranking Pterobranchia taxon.

Evidence from Hox genes that bryozoans are lophotrochozoans
- BiologyEvolution & development
- 2004
The results of a Hox gene survey using degenerate polymerase chain reaction primers in a gymnolaemate bryozoan suggest that bryozoans are not a basal protostome group but closely allied to other lophotrochozoan taxa.

Phylogenomic analyses of lophophorates (brachiopods, phoronids and bryozoans) confirm the Lophotrochozoa concept
- BiologyProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
- 2008
These analyses show that the three lophophorate lineages are affiliated with trochozoan rather than deuterostome phyla, and all hypotheses claiming that they are more closely related to Deuterstomia than to Protostomia can be rejected by topology testing.
Shaping the Things to Come: Ontogeny of Lophotrochozoan Neuromuscular Systems and the Tetraneuralia Concept
- BiologyThe Biological Bulletin
- 2009
Overall, formation of the lophotrochozoan neuromuscular bodyplan appears as a highly dynamic process on both the ontogenetic and the evolutionary timescales, highlighting the importance of insights into these processes for reconstructing ancestral bodyplan features and phylogenetic relationships.

These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the tentaculated arms of pterobranchs are homologous to the lophophores of brachiopods, phoronids, and bryozoans.
The phylogenetic affinities of the chaetognaths: a molecular analysis.
- BiologyMolecular biology and evolution
- 1993
This work proposes that the lineage leading to the chaetognaths arose prior to the advent of the coelomate metazoa, and isolation and nucleotide sequence determination of 18S ribosomal DNA from one species of Chaetognath and one acanthocephalan are described.
Details of the evolutionary history from invertebrates to vertebrates, as deduced from the sequences of 18S rDNA.
- BiologyProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America
- 1994
Phylogenetic comparisons of the sequences of 18S rDNA suggest the monophyly of the deuterostomes, with the exception of the chaetognaths, and support the hypothesis that chordates evolved from free-living ancestors.

The hypothesis of halkieriids and their relatives having a key role in annelid-brachiopod-mollusc evolution is in accord with some earlier proposals and recent evidence from molecular biology, but casts doubt on a number of favoured concepts.
Structure and Function of Metazoan Ciliary Bands and Their Phylogenetic Significance
- Biology
- 1987
The trochaea theory predicts that Porifera and Cnidaria have only monociliate cells and lack ciliary bands used in filter-feeding, and that the gastroneuralian larvae have downstream-collecting ciliated bands with prototroch and metatroch of compound cilia on multiciliate cells.
