The controlled exfoliation of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) into pristine single- or few-layer nanosheets remains a significant barrier to fundamental studies and device applications of TMDs. Here we report a novel strategy for exfoliating crystalline MoS2 into suspensions of nanosheets with retention of the semiconducting 2H phase. The controlled reaction of MoS2 with substoichiometric amounts n-butyllithium results in intercalation of the edges of the crystals, which are then…

Reductive exfoliation of substoichiometric MoS2 bilayers using hydrazine salts.
TLDR
The conclusion is that intercalation does not occur during the process and that exfoliation is instead facilitated by the reduction of Mo centres leading to the exfolation of substoichiometric bilayers with distorted lattices.
Redox Exfoliation of Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenides.
TLDR
This method is generalizable and effective in preparing high-concentration dispersions with narrow layer thickness distributions more rapidly and with safer reagents than alternative solution-based approaches and is demonstrated in a range of solvent systems that were previously inaccessible due to large surface energy differences.
Engineering the Edges of MoS2 (WS2) Crystals for Direct Exfoliation into Monolayers in Polar Micromolecular Solvents.
TLDR
This work elucidates the importance of decreasing the lateral size of layered crystals to significantly enhance their exfoliability, providing a new strategy for the large-scale preparation of nanoscale TMDC monolayers by liquid exfoliation.
High Yield Exfoliation of WS2 Crystals into 1-2 Layer Semiconducting Nanosheets and Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from WS2/CdS Nanorod Composites.
TLDR
The preparation of 1-2 layer semiconducting WS2 nanosheets in a yield of 18-22 wt % by a modified LPE method that involves preintercalation with substoichometric quantities of n-butyllithium is reported.
Water-Soluble Defect-Rich MoS2 Ultrathin Nanosheets for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution.
TLDR
A facile cryo-mediated liquid phase exfoliation method is reported to synthesize water-soluble defect-rich MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets (d-MoS2 NSs) with the assistance of NaBH4 in the solvent to show enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance.
Insight into the structural and electronic nature of chemically exfoliated molybdenum disulfide nanosheets in aqueous dispersions.
TLDR
In-plane X-ray diffraction of the nanosheets indicates that the 1T structure was preserved after reoxidation upon aging the dispersions in air, suggesting the formation of metastable neutral MoS2.

TLDR
Above an annealing temperature of 300 °C, chemically exfoliated MoS2 exhibit prominent band gap photoluminescence, similar to mechanically exfoliate monolayers, indicating that their semiconducting properties are largely restored.

Ripples and layers in ultrathin MoS2 membranes.
TLDR
Electron microscopy shows that monolayer MoS2 displays long-range crystalline order, although surface roughening has been observed with ripples which can reach 1 nm in height, just as in the case of graphene, implying that similar mechanisms are responsible for the stability of both two-dimensional materials.
Fast and Efficient Preparation of Exfoliated 2H MoS2 Nanosheets by Sonication-Assisted Lithium Intercalation and Infrared Laser-Induced 1T to 2H Phase Reversion.
TLDR
It is found that the complete lithium intercalation of MoS2 with butyllithium could be effected within 1.5 h with the aid of sonication, and the 2H to 1T phase transition that occurs during the lithiumintercalation could be reversed by IR laser irradiation with a DVD optical drive.

TLDR
It is shown that chemically exfoliated nanosheets of MoS2 containing a high concentration of the metallic 1T phase can electrochemically intercalate ions with extraordinary efficiency and achieve capacitance values ranging from ∼400 to ∼700 F cm(-3) in a variety of aqueous electrolytes.

TLDR
This work demonstrates a functionalization route that results in organic groups bonded to the MoS2 surface via covalent C-S bonds, based on lithium intercalation, chemical exfoliation and subsequent quenching of the negative charges residing on theMoS2 by electrophiles such as diazonium salts.
