We analyze controllability and observability conditions for second order descriptor systems and show how the classical conditions for first order systems can be generalized to this case. We show that performing a classical transformation to first order form may destroy some controllability and observability properties. As an example, we demonstrate that the loss of impulse controllability in constrained multibody systems is due to the representation as a first order system. To avoid this…

Reachability and controllability of discrete time descriptor systems using the Weierstrass decomposition

Algebraic criteria regarding the reachability and controllability of a descriptor system that involve its causal and non-causal subsystems are formulated.

Analyzing the set of uncontrollable second order generalized linear systems

This paper considers the space of second order generalized time-invariant linear systems, Eẍ = A1ẋ + A2x + Bu, and uses the rank of a certain constant matrix that is called “the controllability matrix” ofsecond order generalized linear systems to study the geometry of the set of uncontrollable systems.

Controllability matrix of second order generalized linear systems

Let (E,A1,A2,B) be a quadruple of matrices representing a two-order generalized time-invariant linear system, Ex = A1x+A2x+Bu. In this paper we study controllability of second order generalized

Observability of linear discrete-time systems of algebraic and difference equations

The notion of observability for higher order discrete-time systems of algebraic and difference equations is studied and it is found that observability is connected with the coprimeness of the polynomial matrices of the higher order system and the facilitation of the matrix pencils of the descriptor system.

Lyapunov method for stability of descriptor second-order and high-order systems

In this study, the stability problem of descriptor second-order systems is considered. Lyapunov equations for stability of second-order systemsare established by using Lyapunov method. The existence

Existence of Reachable and Observable Triples of Linear Discrete-Time Descriptor Systems

This work studies the reachability and observability of discrete-time descriptor systems and considers the following problem: Given a matrix pair (E, A), find a matrix B (C) such that the

Existence of Reachable and Observable Triples of Linear Discrete-Time Descriptor Systems

This work studies the reachability and observability of discrete-time descriptor systems and considers the following problem: Given a matrix pair (E, A), find a matrix B (C) such that the

We discuss optimal control problems for general unstructured linear differentialalgebraic equations of arbitrary index. We discuss controllability and observability in the higher order case and show

Optimal control of second‐order and high‐order descriptor systems

This study investigates the optimal control problem of second‐order descriptor systems. The optimal control is characterized by using a new second‐order generalized Riccati equation, which is

Static output feedback stabilization for second-order singular systems using model reduction methods

In this paper, the static output feedback stabilization for large-scale unstable second-order singular systems is investigated. First, the upper bound of all unstable eigenvalues of second-order

Controllability and Observability Criteria for Multivariable Linear Second-Order Models

Criteria are discussed for the determination of controllability, stabilizability, observability, or detectability of linear second-order multivariable models of, for example, large space structures.

Controllability, observability, and duality in singular systems

The concepts of controllability and observability for systems of the form E\dot{x} = Ax + Bu, y = Cx, E singular are considered. A theory is presented which unifies the three main approaches to this

Solvability, controllability, and observability of continuous descriptor systems

First, the classical theories of matrix pencils are related to the solvability of descriptor systems, and the concepts of reachability, controllability, and observability of state variable systems to descriptor systems are extended.

Descriptor Systems Without Controllability at Infinity

This paper concerns the structure that can be achieved by feedback in descriptor systems that lack controllability at infinity. Staircase and double staircase condensed forms obtained through a

Transformation of high order linear differential-algebraic systems to first order

This work analyzes the classical procedure of turning the system into a first order system and demonstrates that this approach may lead to different solvability results and smoothness requirements, and derives existence and uniqueness results for differential-algebraic systems of arbitrary order and index.

Regularization of Descriptor Systems by Derivative and Proportional State Feedback

It is shown that derivative and proportional feedback controls can be constructed such that the closed loop system has a given form and is also regular and has index at most 1 and ensures the solvability of the resulting system of dynamic-algebraic equations.

A behavioural approach to time-varying linear systems

We develop a behavioural approach to linear, time-varying, differential algebraic systems. The analysis is “almost everywhere” in the sense that the statements hold on R ⊂ T, where T is a discrete

Regularization of Linear Descriptor Systems with Variable Coefficients

We study linear descriptor control systems with rectangular variable coefficient matrices. We introduce condensed forms for such systems under equivalence transformations and use these forms to
