Using more than 500,000 instantaneous temperature and sali nity profiles, including recent ARGO data, a global ocean climatology of monthly mean properties of the “barrier layer” (BL) phenomenon is constructed. This climatology is ba ed on the individual analysis of instantaneous profiles in contrast with previous lar ge-scale climatologies derived 5 from gridded fields.
