Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a gram-negative colonic anaerobe, can utilize three forms of starch: amylose, amylopectin, and pullulan. Previously, a neopullulanase, a pullulanase, and an alpha-glucosidase from B. thetaiotaomicron had been purified and characterized biochemically.
