Glomerular hyperfiltration in established, moderately hyperglycemic, insulin-dependent diabetes has been hypothesized to be the result of mild volume expansion. Because glomerular hyperfiltration in diabetics is normalized by insulin treatment, then insulin treatment should also reduce extracellular fluid or plasma volume.
