This study combined the moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), meteorological aridity indices, and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration indices (SPEI) to identify the drought responses of planted and natural forests in Yunnan Province and employed the optimal SPEI and the ESA as indices to statistically analyze the response characteristics.

Stock Volume Dependency of Forest Drought Responses in Yunnan, China

Both the time scale of the meteorological drought index and the spatial difference in forest stock volumes should be considered when evaluating forest drought responses at regional and global scales.

Higher Sensitivity of Planted Forests' Productivity Than Natural Forests to Droughts in China

Planted forests (PFs) account for about one‐third of the total area of forests in China and make important contributions to carbon sequestration and ecosystem services. Droughts pose a major threat

Different responses of the radial growth of the planted and natural forests to climate change in humid subtropical China

ABSTRACT China holds the world’s largest area of planted forests, which play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Knowledge gaps remain on the responses of the growth of planted forests to

Spatio-Temporal Dynamic of Disturbances in Planted and Natural Forests for the Saihanba Region of China

Various disturbances like extreme climate events, fires, and insect outbreak severely impact forest ecosystems, and differences are expected between planted and natural forests. However, there is

Impacts of Water Stress on Forest Recovery and Its Interaction with Canopy Height

Forest recovery following extreme drought events was analyzed for Yunnan Province, southwest China and indicated that canopy height casts an important influence on forest recovery and tall trees have greater vulnerability and risk to dieback and mortality from drought.

Spatial Upscaling of Forest Response to Drought

We have integrated the observational capability of satellite remote sensing with plot-scale tree-ring data to upscale the evaluation of forest responses to drought. Satellite data, such as the

The forest recovery path after drought dependence on forest type and stock volume

Drought legacy effects of forest ecosystems have been widely observed. However, the influence of forest type and stock volume on its recovery path is poorly understood. In this research, we first

Satellite Evidence for Divergent Forest Responses within Close Vicinity to Climate Fluctuations in a Complex Terrain

Climate change has a significant impact on forest ecosystems worldwide, but it is unclear whether forest responses to climate fluctuations are homogeneous across regions. In this study, we

Assessments of Drought Impacts on Vegetation in China with the Optimal Time Scales of the Climatic Drought Index

The spatio-temporal characteristics of drought are investigated and the different responses of vegetation growth to drought during the growing season revealed that the frequency of drought has increased in the 21st century with the drying trend occurring in most of China.

Diverse spatiotemporal responses in vegetation growth to droughts in China

Global warming-related climate changes have significantly impacted the growth of terrestrial vegetation. Quantifying the spatiotemporal characteristic of the vegetation’s response to climate is

Productivity as related to diversity and age in planted versus natural forests

Aim Little is known about the performance of plantations relative to natural forests of the same climate zone and age. China has more plantations than any other country as a consequence of massive

Climate trends and behaviour of drought indices based on precipitation and evapotranspiration in Portugal

Abstract. Distinction between drought and aridity is crucial to understand water scarcity processes. Drought indices are used for drought identification and drought severity characterisation. The

Response of vegetation to drought time-scales across global land biomes

It is found that arid biomes respond to drought at short time-scales; that is, there is a rapid vegetation reaction as soon as water deficits below normal conditions occur, and that the response of vegetation to drought depends on characteristic drought time- scales for each biome.

Mortality of large trees and lianas following experimental drought in an Amazon forest.

The hypothesis that tree mortality increases abruptly during drought episodes when plant-available soil water declines below a critical minimum threshold is tested and suggests significant, adverse impacts on the global carbon cycle if climatic changes follow current trends.

Tipping point of a conifer forest ecosystem under severe drought

Drought-induced tree mortality has recently received considerable attention. Questions have arisen over the necessary intensity and duration thresholds of droughts that are sufficient to trigger
