Consolidated theory of fluid thermodiffusion

  title={Consolidated theory of fluid thermodiffusion},
  author={Alexander Van-Brunt and Patrick E. Farrell and Charles W. Monroe},
We present the Onsager–Stefan–Maxwell thermodiffusion equations, which account for the Soret and Dufour effects in multicomponent fluids by treating heat as a pseudo-component. Unlike transport laws derived from kinetic theory, this framework preserves the structure of the isothermal Stefan–Maxwell equations, separating the thermodynamic forces that drive diffusion from the force that drives heat flow. The Onsager–Stefan– Maxwell transport-coefficient matrix is symmetric, and the second law of…

Finite element methods for multicomponent convection-diffusion

. We develop finite element methods for coupling the steady-state Onsager–Stefan– Maxwell equations to compressible Stokes flow. These equations describe multicomponent flow at low Reynolds number,

On Inversion of the Linear Laws of Irreversible Thermodynamics

A procedure is developed for inverting the linear laws of irreversible thermodynamics in spite of the singular nature of the admittance matrix when barycentric diffusion currents are employed. The

Augmented saddle point formulation of the steady-state Stefan-Maxwell diffusion problem

This work investigates structure-preserving finite element discretizations of the steady-state Stefan--Maxwell diffusion problem which governs diffusion within a phase consisting of multiple species and constructs a symmetric positive definite augmented Onsager transport matrix.

Thermal Diffusion of Ternary Mixtures

Experiments have been performed on ternary mixtures, consisting of two isotopes and a nonisotopic compound. It is found that the influence of the third compound on the separation of the isotopes
