title={Consistencies in Sex Differences 1 Running Head : SEX DIFFERENCES ON THE COGNITIVE ABILITIES TEST Consistencies in Sex Differences on the Cognitive Abilities Test across Countries , Grades , and Cohorts},
  author={David F. Lohman and Joni M. Lakin},
Recently, Strand, Deary, and Smith (2006) reported sex differences for over 320,000 students 11-12 years old on the Cognitive Abilities Test. Although mean differences were small, score distributions for males were more variable. Males were also overrepresented at the upper and lower extremes of the score distributions on the Quantitative and Nonverbal batteries and at the lower extreme of the Verbal Battery. However, it is unclear whether these results are unique to the U.K. or whether they… Expand

Sex Differences in Variability in General Intelligence: A New Look at the Old Question
  • W. Johnson, A. Carothers, I. Deary
  • Psychology, Medicine
  • Perspectives on psychological science : a journal of the Association for Psychological Science
  • 2008
Using two population-wide surveys of general intelligence in 11-year-olds in Scotland, it was shown that there were substantial departures from normality in the distribution, with less variability in the higher range than in the lower, and sex differences in variability did not appear to account for sex Differences in high-level achievement. Sex differences in cognitive abilities test scores: a UK national picture.
Boys tend to be both the lowest and the highest performers in terms of their reasoning abilities, which warns against the danger of stereotyping boys as low achievers. Expand
Sex Differences in Variability in Intellectual Abilities: A New Look at an Old Controversy
Contemporary research on sex differences in intellectual abilities has focused on male-female differences in average performance, implicitly assuming homogeneity of variance. To examine the validityExpand
Sex Differences in Educational Achievement: A Longitudinal Study
Research on sex differences in achievement has generally been concerned only with mean differences. In addition, such studies have frequently been limited to single grades or cross-sectionalExpand
Sex differences in mental test scores, variability, and numbers of high-scoring individuals.
An analysis of mental test scores from six studies that used national probability samples provided evidence that although average sex differences have been generally small and stable over time, the test scores of males consistently have larger variance. Expand
Gender differences in variability in intellectual abilities: A cross-cultural perspective
A cross-cultural quantitative review of contemporary findings of gender differences in variability in verbal, mathematical, and spatial abilities was conducted to assess the generalizability of U.S.Expand
The Science of Sex Differences in Science and Mathematics
It is concluded that early experience, biological factors, educational policy, and cultural context affect the number of women and men who pursue advanced study in science and math and that these effects add and interact in complex ways. Expand
Emergence and characterization of sex differences in spatial ability: a meta-analysis.
Meta-analysis is used, a method for synthesizing empirical studies, to investigate sex differences in spatial ability and suggests that sex differences arise on some types of spatial ability but not others, and that, when sex differences are found, they can be detected across the life span. Expand
Gender differences in mathematics performance: a meta-analysis.
It is concluded that gender differences in mathematics performance are small, and the lower performance of women in problem solving that is evident in high school requires attention. Expand
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children III and the Cognitive Abilities Test (Form 6): Are the general factors the same?
This study investigated the concurrent validity of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children— Third Edition (WISC-III; Wechsler, 1991) and Form 6 of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT6; Lohman &Expand
Developmental patterns of spatial ability: an early sex difference.
Analysis of covariance suggests that an early female precocity in language skills may mask a male advantage in spatial ability during the primary school years, and it is feasible to measure spatial ability throughout this developmental range with modified versions of adult paper-and-pencil tests.
