Background: Pain among the elderly is pervasive, under-treated and can be properly managed by judiciously using analgesics in the armamentarium. For severe pain, opioids generally provide the most effective pain relief, but concerns about safety and tolerability have limited, often unnecessarily, their utilization in the geriatric population. Objective: It is common for geriatric patients to be taking more than one medicine. Oxymorphone might be particularly well suited for use in geriatric…
Treatment of Chronic Pain in Older People: Evidence-Based Choice of Strong-Acting Opioids
TLDR
Data derived from clinical studies in which oxymorphone has been evaluated against other opioids for chronic pain, including chronic noncancer pain or cancer pain in populations that included but were not limited to older adult patients, support that it is an effective analgesic with an adverse event profile consistent with other opioids.
Pharmacological management of persistent pain in older persons.
TLDR
Both appropriate and inappropriate medica- tions for older adults are detailed herein, as well as their contraindications and potential drug- drug or drug-disease interactions.

Management of Chronic Arthritis Pain in the Elderly
TLDR
Successful rheumatic pain management in the elderly should begin with an accurate diagnosis by the physician, and patients must be realistic in their expectations, with attention given to the co-morbidities of pain as well as the global health status of the patient.
Can Chronic Pain Patients Be Adequately Treated Using Generic Pain Medications to the Exclusion of Brand-Name Ones?
TLDR
This review evaluates some of the important medications in the armamentarium of pain physicians that are frequently used in the management of chronic pain, and that are currently at the forefront of this issue, including Opana, Gralise, and Horizant that are each available in generic forms and Lyrica, which is currently unavailable as generic medication.
Treating opioid‐induced constipation in patients taking other medications: Avoiding CYP450 drug interactions
TLDR
The mechanism of action of these drugs, with an emphasis on comparison of their potential for metabolic drug interactions, are summarized.

TLDR
It is mandatory to consider a pharmacologic interaction with a potentiation and/or an addition in effects of other drugs when judging the net action of opioids in the elderly, and therapy of chronic pain has to be considered in the light of multidrug intake.
Effectiveness and safety of oral extended-release oxymorphone for the treatment of cancer pain: a pilot study
TLDR
Cancer patients stabilized on morphine CR or oxycodone CR were safely and rapidly converted to a lower milligram dose of oxymorphone ER that provided adequate pain relief with comparable tolerability, and these results justify additional trials with oxymorphones ER.
Constipation related to narcotic therapy: A protocol for nurses and patients
TLDR
A protocol that incorporates a schedule of drugs and dosages and specific patient and nursing guidelines for daily evaluation of bowel function, with education about dietary, fluid, and exercise requirements, will help nurses practice prevention and contribute to patients' comfort.
Opioid complications and side effects.
TLDR
The role of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain is influenced by the fact that these potent analgesics are associated with a significant number of side effects and complications, and these phenomena are the focus of this review.
Looking beyond the administered drug: metabolites of opioid analgesics.
TLDR
The role that active metabolites play in the therapeutic efficacy and tolerability profiles of frequently prescribed opioid analgesics is explored to provide physicians with an overview of the effects of metabolic mechanisms to help inform the opioid selection process.
Efficacy of Oxymorphone Extended Release in Postsurgical Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial in Knee Arthroplasty
TLDR
Oxymorphone ER provided significant improvements over placebo for most standard single‐dose analgesic parameters, including mean total pain relief (TOTPAR) over 0 to 12 hours, as well as for all multiple‐dose (24‐h) efficacy assessments.
Management of common opioid-induced adverse effects.
TLDR
Understanding the mechanism for opioid-induced nausea will aid in the selection of appropriate agents, and Physicians should minimize the development of constipation using prophylactic measures.
Methylnaltrexone for opioid-induced constipation in advanced illness.
TLDR
Subcutaneous methylnaltrexone rapidly induced laxation in patients with advanced illness and opioid-induced constipation and did not appear to affect central analgesia or precipitate opioid withdrawal.
