Considerations on the genus Gordius (Nematomorpha, horsehair worms), with the description of seven new species

title={Considerations on the genus Gordius (Nematomorpha, horsehair worms), with the description of seven new species},
  author={A. Schmidt‐Rhaesa},
Specimens belonging to the genus Gordius (horsehair worms, Nematomorpha) are comparatively poor in diagnostic characters and determination of species is difficult. The characters important for determination (coloration, size, shape of anterior and posterior end, structures in the male posterior end, cuticular structure) are discussed. From the 119 species of the genus, 40 are regarded as invalid. The remaining 79 species and their characters are summarized in a table. The species Gordius… Expand
The collection of Nematomorpha in the Zoological Museum Hamburg, including description of a new species, Chordodes jelkae sp. n.
The collection of horsehair worms in the Zoological Museum of the Centrum für Naturkunde (CeNak) of the University of Hamburg has been revised and one new species is described from the material of the collection. Expand
A new species of Gordius (Phylum Nematomorpha) from terrestrial habitats in North America
The consistent occurrence of this gordiid in terrestrial habitats, along with its distinct egg morphology, suggests that this new species of hairworm has a terrestrial life cycle. Expand
On the recovery of horsehair worms, Gordius sp. (Nematomorpha: Gordiida) from pork in Shillong, India
A case history of the occurrence of two nematomorph worms in the meat of a pig in Shillong, India is described and one of the recovered specimens was studied by scanning electron microscopy for species determination and identified as Gordius sp. Expand
Chapter 15 – Phylum Nematomorpha
This chapter reviews all pertinent information on the general biology of freshwater gordiids and provides new information on hairworm life cycles and novel sampling and culturing techniques for this fascinating group of freshwater invertebrates. Expand
A new millipede-parasitizing horsehair worm, Gordius chiashanus sp. nov., at medium altitudes in Taiwan (Nematomorpha, Gordiida)
Abstract Gordius chiashanussp. nov., a newly described horsehair worm that parasitizes the Spirobolus millipede, is one of the three described horsehair worm species in Taiwan. It is morphologicallyExpand
Diversity of nematomorph and cohabiting nematode parasites in riparian ecosystems around the Kii Peninsula, Japan
It is suggested that diverse parasites and their orthopteran hosts drive the parasite-mediated energy flow across the stream and riparian ecosystems. Expand
Cryptic species of hairworm parasites revealed by molecular data and crowdsourcing of specimen collections.
By using crowdsourcing, citizen scientists have collected and submitted samples of Gordius cf. Expand
New Records of Horsehair Worms (Nematomorpha) from India and a Summary of All Known Indian Species

Going Solo: Discovery of the First Parthenogenetic Gordiid (Nematomorpha: Gordiida)
Despite the severe fitness costs associated with sexual reproduction, its persistence and pervasiveness among multicellular organisms testifies to its intrinsic, short-term advantages. However, theExpand
