Smooth-surfaced elements of endoplasmic reticulum contact and are attached to the outer membranes of mitochondria in rat liver and onion stem. Some connections appear as short, 150–300 Å diameter tubules that bridge the space between the conjoining elements. In liver, the smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum cisternae connected to the outer mitochondrial membrane are shown to be continuous with rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum.
