The origin of microsporidia and the evolutionary relationships among the major lineages of fungi have been examined by molecular phylogeny using alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin. Chytrids, basidiomycetes, ascomycetes, and microsporidia were all recovered with high support, and the zygomycetes were consistently paraphyletic.
