We argue that strings (vortices) and monopoles are confined, when fields receiving nontrivial Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phases around a string develop vacuum expectation values (VEVs). We illustrate this in an SU(2) × U(1) gauge theory with charged triplet complex scalar fields admitting Alice strings and monopoles, by introducing charged doublet scalar fields receiving nontrivial AB phases around the Alice string. The Alice string carries a half U(1) magnetic flux and 1 / 4 SU(2) magnetic flux taking…

Vortex-bound solitons in topological superfluid $^3$He

. The different superfluid phases of 3 He break several symmetries. The resulting p -wave order parameters include anisotropy axes both in the orbital and spin spaces, characterizing those broken

Topological confinement of vortices in two-flavor dense QCD

We find a novel confinement mechanism in the two-flavor dense quark matter proposed recently, that consists of the 2SC condensates and the P-wave diquark condensates of d-quarks. This quark matter

Aharonov-Bohm defects

We discuss what happens when a field receiving an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase develops a vacuum expectation value (VEV), with an example of an Alice string in a $U(1) \times SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled

Non-Abelian strings and domain walls in two Higgs doublet models

A bstractContrary to the standard model that does not admit topologically nontrivial solitons, two Higgs doublet models admit topologically stable vortex strings and domain walls. We numerically

Non-Abelian vortices with an Aharonov-Bohm effect

A bstractThe interplay of gauge dynamics and flavor symmetries often leads to remarkably subtle phenomena in the presence of soliton configurations. Non-Abelian vortices — vortex solutions with

The effective action of a BPS Alice string

Recently a BPS Alice string has been found in a $$U(1)\times SO(3)$$U(1)×SO(3) gauge theory coupled with three charged complex scalar fields in the triplet representation (in JHEP 1709:046

Defect branes as Alice strings

A bstractThere exist various defect-brane backgrounds in supergravity theories which arise as the low energy limit of string theories. These backgrounds typically have non-trivial monodromies, and if

Instantons in the Higgs phase

When instantons are put into the Higgs phase, vortices are attached to instantons. We construct such composite solitons as 1/4 BPS states in five-dimensional supersymmetric U(NC) gauge theory with

TOPICAL REVIEW: Solitons in the Higgs phase: the moduli matrix approach

We review our recent work on solitons in the Higgs phase. We use U(NC) gauge theory with NF Higgs scalar fields in the fundamental representation, which can be extended to possess eight supercharges.
